My favorite analogy is that a kiter uses a kite like a sailboat uses a sail. You can go downwind, most of the time you track perpendicular to the wind, and you can tack upwind too!

You can ride around for 5 hours covering tons of miles, and end in the same place you started

YES - you can totally kite up wind. I was having a hard time learing how to snowkite up wind at first, so I ended up taking a lesson in Newfoundland Canada from a company called my newfoundland adventures - it was amazing was some instruction in a prime environment did. I was trying to learn on a feild outside of Toronto but when I went to Newfoundland I got to practice on an alpine plateau at 2000' that was 50 sq/km and totally snow covered. With the snowmobile backup, it make learning easy and fun!
